JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A couple in Jacksonville’s North Shore neighborhood is cleaning up after tidal flooding damaged part of their home following days of nor’easter conditions and gusty winds.

Heather McClure and her husband said they have lived in the home for six years but have never seen tidal flooding cause this much damage.

“I know the king tide does happen every year, but this is the worst it’s ever been without an actual hurricane,” McClure said.

McClure showed Action News Jax the ankle-deep water in her backyard. Inside, up to four inches of water flooded the laundry room, leaving the couple unsure what they can salvage.

She described the experience as emotional.

“We have to deal with this... clean up our basement every time it floods,” McClure said.

The couple said failed, hundred-year-old French drains have made the problem worse.

The flooding extended beyond their property. Action News Jax saw water covering other yards in the neighborhood, where street drains could not keep up with the tide. Water also carried trash into a yard.

As cleanup begins, the couple is looking for an expert to help prevent the flooding from happening again.

“I guess if anyone has ever dealt with this, like with the 100-year-old French drains or the bulkhead, that would be great help,” McClure said.
