A tiger shark named Weimar pinged off Jacksonville's coast Friday and Sunday, according to OCEARCH's Global Shark Tracker.
Weimar was tagged and released during OCEARCH's Low Country Expedition in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on March 3.
According to OCEARCH's website, "A 'Ping' is determined when the tagged shark's dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water and transmits a signal to a satellite overhead. The transmission then sends back an estimated geo-location."
OCEARCH tags sharks in order to generate "critical scientific data related to tracking (telemetry) and biological studies of keystone marine species such as great white and tiger sharks, in conjunction with conservation outreach and education at a measurable global scale."
In February, OCEARCH announced a collaboration with Jacksonville University. OCEARCH also conducted an expedition off Jacksonville's coast in March 2016.
