A veteran firefighter from New York was on his way home from Disney when he helped rescue a man from a burning SUV in Camden County.

Ciro Napolitano and his wife Antoinette were celebrating their 31st wedding anniversary at Disney World over the weekend.

During their drive home on Interstate 95 North, they saw a car crash.

"All of a sudden all of the cars started coming to a stop and we saw a plume of smoke,"  Ciro Napolitano said. "My wife started saying, 'Oh my gosh, a car accident.'"

According to a crash report, three people were in the SUV when it crashed.

One person was ejected and another was able to get out but the driver was unconscious and pinned in the driver's seat.

Action News Jax talked with Ciro Napolitano on Wednesday while he was in Pennsylvania still making his way back to Brooklyn.

He said he has worked as a firefighter in Brooklyn for the last 30 years.

Antoinette Napolitano said she was nervous as her husband tried to rescue the injured driver.

"I know he's got to do this because that's what he's all about," she said.

Antoinette recorded the whole thing from her cellphone as her husband tried to pry the door open with a crow bar he keeps in his trunk.

"I saw the guy in the car and the heavy smoke filling the cab, so I tried to get the door open," Ciro Napolitano said. "He was unconscious. He was bleeding profusely."

He said he was unable to open the driver's side door but made his way in to help the victim through the passenger side.

He said he was able to feel for the seat belt and unfasten it since he couldn't see because of all of the smoke.

He said he was able to pull the driver over the middle console so his head was near the open door.

"I got his body over the drive shaft and his head out toward the passenger door and his arms out but his legs were pinned under the dashboard," he said. "Something had to be done because the guy was going to suffocate and then he was going to burn to death."

In the video you can see an ambulance arrive. A spokesperson with Camden County Fire and Rescue said they were able to help free the driver.

Ciro Napolitano said this is the third rescue he has been part of while off duty.

"No fireman, firefighter could pass that scene," he said. "They would've seen it, seen the guy slumped over and the amount of smoke that was in the car (and) they would've reacted."
