One dead, a dozen people displaced following fire at Westside apartment complex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One person has died and a dozen people are displaced because of a 2-alarm fire early Saturday on Jacksonville's Westside.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the victim is an adult and was found inside a burned unit at the Preserve at Cedar River Apartments on Confederate Point Road.

That person has not been identified. Police were not immediately able to enter the apartment to process the scene due to concerns about the safety of the building.

At least two apartments appeared badly burned, according to Sgt.  Robert John of JSO's Homicide unit.

The Red Cross tells Action News that six apartment were damaged and at least 12 people are displaced.

According to the firefighters union, at least one firefighter was taken to a local hospital for treatment due to exhaustion.

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
