VIDEO: Shopper catches two thieves installing a gas skimmer
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office said a credit card skimmer was located at an unnamed station located off I-10 west of Jacksonville.
The device is called an "overlay skimmer," and its designed to mimic the appearance of a card reader at the gas pumps.
A 2017 report from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services show 613 skimmers were found at pumps.
Deputies advise consumers to pay close attention to the plastic surrounding the card reader. A skimmer device may have newer plastic or plastic with a different texture, they said.
In 2016, there were 219 skimmers located.
