Woman pulled to safety by officers after sitting on side of Acosta Bridge for 6 hours

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman sitting on the side of the Acosta Bridge for six hours on Thursday afternoon was pulled to safety by Jacksonville Sheriff's Officers.

Police were called to the scene around 1:20 p.m. and JSO's SWAT team also responded to the scene.

Southbound Jefferson Street was closed and southbound lanes of the bridge were closed during the police response. Two police and fire boats were in place under the bridge during the incident as well.

JSO Public Information Officer Christian Hancock said the unidentified woman was holding what appeared to be a steak knife, but never made any threats to herself or the officers.

Hancock said the woman became very lethargic as time went on, was not talking clearly and then ceased communicating with officers.

Officers were then able to pull the woman to safety and then she was taken to the hospital by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. 

Hancock said the woman is not facing any charges at this time and will likely be held under the Baker Act for observation.
