JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WJAX-TV) — (ActionNewsJax) Police are looking for a person of interest in a data theft investigation in connection with VyStar Credit Union.
Investigators say there have been at least 80 reports of compromised accounts.
VyStar released an update about the data compromise on Facebook Wednesday afternoon. The bank says it's not the only one involved:
The news media and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) have been reporting on an apparent account scam that has occurred on a limited number of VyStar accounts as well as other local financial institutions. It is important to note that VyStar is not the only Jacksonville financial institution that has been affected by this apparent scam.
It appears that someone has obtained credit and debit card information from the compromise of a retailer's system and has been using this stolen information to perform fraudulent transactions on accounts. It is NOT a compromise of any VyStar systems or data. The card data information was compromised at a retailer's system.
At this time, the scam has affected a relatively small number of VyStar members in Clay and Duval Counties. However, it is always prudent for members to check their accounts frequently and immediately report any suspicious purchases and activity to VyStar or their financial institution.
VyStar has been cooperating with the JSO as well as Federal officials and at this time, a suspect has been identified. (See photo). We will keep you informed as more information is available.
JSO issued a similar update at 1:30 p.m.
The "investigation has now led us to the point that we believe the breach is not just with VyStar Credit Union," JSO wrote in a news release. "We are asking everyone in Jacksonville and surrounding communities to be vigilant and check their bank accounts for any fraudulent activities," wrote JSO.
