A 23-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a car she was driving fatally struck a University of Florida student and hurt two of his friends in a hit-and-run near campus, police said.
Officers said three companions were standing at a bus stop in front of the Campus Club Apartments when Damaris Guerrero Garcia ran off the road on Saturday night.
She allegedly hit the trio, including University of Florida student Karan Khullar.
Khullar's friends had injuries not considered life-threatening.
Khullar, 22, was thrown several feet by the impact. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Troopers tracked down Guerrero Garcia after someone reported a car driving recklessly on the interstate.
Troopers said the car with Guerrero Garcia inside had obvious signs that it had been in an accident and was beginning to catch on fire because she was driving on a tire rim.
Car debris recovered at the scene matched damage to Guerrero Garcia's car.
Guerrero Garcia told troopers after she was pulled over that she knew she crashed into something but she did not know what.
She said she hadn't consumed any alcohol or drugs after the crash.
Her blood-alcohol level from Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation registered a 0.14.
Gainesville Police Department said Guerrero Garcia will be charged with two counts of DUI damage to person/property, one count of a crash involving death – failure to stop and one count of DUI manslaughter.
SW 37th Boulevard was closed for approximately 4 hours.
