Family says mother, ex-boyfriend found dead in Regency apartment

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two families are looking for answers after a man and woman were found dead at Silver Creek Apartments in Regency just before 10 a.m. on Thursday.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating it as a possible murder-suicide.

JSO identified the woman who was killed as Madelin Maria Cartaya Hernandez.

Hernandez’s daughter tells Action News Jax her mother and her ex-boyfriend are dead.

She said it was a recent breakup.

JSO Sgt. Jay Farhat said there were no witnesses, but several neighbors heard the gunshots.

“I went to just go and throw trash and all of sudden I just heard the gunshots. So I panicked, I said, ‘Where did these gunshots come from?’” said neighbor Juma Mohamed.

“And I ran inside the house because I had my little nephew. So I had to run inside and I had to call my dad and just heard it,” said neighbor Shaifna Sharff.

Farhat said investigators found a weapon at the crime scene.

“The boyfriend and the mother. It’s crazy,” said Sharff. “Her other daughter, she’s just like completely going berserk and she’s screaming.”

Hernandez’s daughter said she has two siblings, including a 9-year-old brother.

“She was a good mother,” she said.

JSO is not looking for any suspects.
