JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Just yards away from where children spent their Labor Day weekend riding bicycles, investigators searched for clues that could lead them to a killer.
JSO says a neighbor walking their dog found a man's body in the backyard of a vacant home on Sunday.
It happened on Jacksonville's west side on Lake Shore Boulevard.
The body had injuries that led investigators to believe he was murdered.
Family and friends of a missing man waited outside at the house for hours, trying to find out for sure if the man found behind the house is their loved one, 23-year-old Jabari Baker. He's been missing since Friday.
"We just want some answers. He doesn't deserve this," said Juanita Marshall, the mother of Baker's 8-month-old son.
JSO has not identified the body yet, but Homicide Unit Sgt. Jay Farhat said it's a black man in his early 20s.
Farhat said and investigators believe they know who he is.
"No one's gotten any sleep. We've been trying to figure out what's going on, trying to do detective work ourselves because we don't know," said Marshall.
Neighbor Irby Becker watched from her front porch as JSO swarmed the vacant house. She says she sees police there every week.
"It's scary. When I go out to get the paper in the morning, I look around before I come out," said Becker.
She said she feels sorry for investigators coping with this gruesome sight on this holiday weekend.
"They've got to go home now to their families and forget what they've seen today. That's hard to do. I know that's hard to do for them," said Becker.
Action News Jax will let you know the identity of that man as soon as JSO confirms it.
