Ponte Vedra Beach man killed in crash on I-95 in St. Johns County

A St. Louis police officer is accused of driving a van too roughly to punish two prisoners, court documents claim.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that a Ponte Vedra Beach man was killed in an early-morning crash on I-95 just north of County Road 210 in St. Johns County.

Tyler Lowery, 21, was driving south on I-95 when his 2009 Nissan drifted into the center median, troopers said. Lowery's car overturned back into traffic and was struck by another car, the FHP said. Another car also struck Lowery's vehicle.

A fourth vehicle slid off the road and into the trees as it tried to avoid the wreck. Troopers said no one in the other three cars suffered any serious injuries.

Lowery died at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, troopers said. It was unknown whether he was wearing a seat belt.
