Melbourne Beach Powerball winner remains a mystery

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida lottery officials say one of three winning tickets in the record Powerball jackpot was sold at a Melbourne Beach grocery store.

The winning ticket was purchased at a Publix on Highway A1A.

The Florida winner’s share of the jackpot comes to $528.6 million, and the store will receive $100,000 for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.

"We are thrilled to announce that Wednesday night’s drawing produced Florida’s 11th Powerball jackpot winner, and Florida had more than 2.1 million winning tickets statewide," said Florida Lottery Secretary Tom Delacenserie. "This series of Powerball jackpot rollovers, which began on Nov. 7, 2015, has generated more than $114.6 million for education and created 18 new Florida millionaires."

The winning numbers were 4-8-19-27-34, and the Powerball was 10.

"I think it would be nice if a local did [win] it," said Joan Bobrowicz of Melbourne Beach. "Knowing how nice our local people are, I'm sure they would help out whoever would need something."

Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing also produced 11 $1 million winners, and one $2 million winner in Florida. The winning $2 million Powerball ticket was sold at a Lake Mary Sav-A-Ton on North Country Club Road.

The locations of the eleven $1 million winning Powerball tickets are as follows:

  • Pine Island Chevron, located at 4450 South Pine Island Road in Davie.
  • Big Boss Stores, located at 671 Highway 98 East in Destin.
  • 7-Eleven, located at 4490 Weston Road in Davie.

  • Zephyrhills Radiant Food Store, located at 6512 Gall Boulevard in Zephyrhills.
  • Orion Gas, located at 10301 Northwest 7th Avenue in Miami.

Florida Lottery contributions represent approximately six percent of the state's total education budget.

Rumors are swirling around who purchased the winning ticket in Melbourne Beach.

Some believe the winner lives only a few miles from the grocery store where the ticket was sold.

"Boy, there is a lot that could be done here in the community with money like that," said neighbor Daniel Bowman. "I think she's a wonderful person, and I look forward to talking to her sometime about it."

Melbourne Beach’s population is about 3,100. There was a growing media presence in front of a house in a neighborhood near the Publix, but no one inside the home would confirm or deny that they won.

Winners have 180 days to claim their prize.

The two other winning tickets were sold in Chino Hills, California; and Munford, Tennessee.

The winners can opt for annual payments over decades or a lump-sum payment.

None of the winners' identities have been revealed yet.
