St. Johns County has raised prices to fish and walk on the pier in St. Augustine Beach.

So, the next time you hang that “Gone fishin’” sign or go to take a stroll along the pier, be ready to pay extra.

“Not a fan,” said Aldo Reale about the price increase.

“They should just make it free for everybody to walk down,” said Jon Michael, who's vising from out of town.

It will cost a $1 extra to walk on the pier and $3 extra to fish.

Annual fishing passes went up from $20 to $40, and for those who live out of the county it’s now $60, instead of $30.

Some locals said they shouldn’t be charged at all, especially to just walk on the pier.

“I don’t go on the pier. I don’t like the fact that they do charge,” said Reale.

Some out-of-towners were surprised there was even a cost.

“Where we’ve been before, it’s not something you’ve had to pay to do,” said DeAnna White who's visiting from Ohio.

County leaders said they raised the prices to help with repair, maintenance and operation expenses.

The St. Augustine Beach mayor said she had no idea about the increased prices until Action News Jax told her. The county said there’s no record of the city being formally notified of the fee increase.
