Report: Publix coming to Palencia in St. Johns County

The Palencia Commons shopping center is expected to get its first food supermarket in years.

Action News Jax's partner Jacksonville Business Journal reports that Florida-based Publix has signed a 20-year lease to anchor the Palencia shopping center in the same location that a Food Lion store previously occupied.

The redesigning for the incoming 45,600-square-foot store is expected to start early 2017, and will be ready for shoppers by 2018, Jax Biz reports.

The area has been without a grocery store since Food Lion left in 2012. Nearby residents have had to drive to St. Augustine or Nocatee for their needs.

In addition to the Publix, there are plans to add 16,800-square-feet more retail space and two more tenants, which are Anytime Fitness and Broad City Tavern.

The shopping center has 4,000-square feet of retail space available and another 8,700-square-feet available in the planned shop space, Jax Biz reports.

“Palencia residents and nearby retailers have expressed the need and desire to have another grocery store anchor here in the center,” Senior director of retail leasing Katy Figg told the Jacksonville Business Journal. “Publix has been asked for by name for many years, and we’re proud to say we’ve been able to attract them to the center and take advantage of the growth in the Palencia area.”
