The group pushing to turn the USS Adams into a museum is making strides in the River City.
It's all a part of the "Race to the Boat Show." Dozens of spectators watched as 1,600 rubber boats raced not just for the title of first place, but for a bigger cause: to raise money to place a Naval Warship Museum in Jacksonville.
"Jacksonville has the third largest concentration of veterans and military personnel in the country," said Joe Snowberger with USS Adams Museum.
Snowberger said that's why having a museum of this caliber is needed.
"The Adams was stationed in Mayport along with a couple other ships. Many Jacksonville veterans served on those war ships. Later this fall, we hope to bring the USS Charles F Adams to downtown Jacksonville," said Snowberger.
The museum will be docked by the Shipyards on the Northbank.
Snowberger said the $6 Million project will not only bring jobs to downtown, but to showcase Jacksonville worldwide.
"Showcase to the world that Jacksonville is a friendly military and veterans city. This is a part of our legacy," said Snowberger.
