ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Members of the community who support keeping a monument to fallen soldiers gathered in the Plaza de la Constitucion in St. Augustine on Sunday.

The group of more than 150 people who call themselves “North Florida Patriots” waved American flags and walked along the sidewalks waving at drivers.

Some members are petitioning the city government to reverse its decision to remove a monument honoring fallen Confederate soldiers.  One attendee tells Action News Jax the monument “is a memorial for loved ones who never came home.”

Two hours after the event began, an Action News Jax Photographer, who was capturing video of the event, noticed a small group of about 20 people holding “Black Lives Matter” signs who had positioned themselves across from the Plaza.

The two groups had a peaceful exchange.  We are told there were no arrests.
