UPDATE 8 a.m.: The FBI has taken over the investigation in New Orleans where 10 people were killed Wednesday and about 30 were injured after a man intentionally plowed his pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street. The incident occurred at about 3:15 a.m., New Orleans police said.
The FBI said during a news conference Wednesday that improvised explosive devices were found. The New Orleans chief of police said that the man fired shots at officers after he ran his vehicle into the crowd. Two of the officers were shot and injured, New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said at the news conference.
“He was hellbent on creating carnage,” Kirkpatrick said.
Witnesses told CBS News reporter Kati Weis that a truck crashed into the crowd at a high rate of speed, and then the driver got out and started firing a weapon, with police returning fire.
“He was trying to hit as many people as he could,” Kirkpatrick said.
During the news conference Wednesday morning, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell characterized the incident as a “terrorist” event. However, the FBI agent in charge said it was not a terrorist event.
