Report: Unlicensed Jacksonville teen crashes after chase

Derrick Matthews

FLORIDA: Boy dies after drunken driver strikes 5 children

A Jacksonville teen was arrested after crashing a 2008 Toyota Camry while attempting to elude police, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Derrick Matthews, 17, was spotted by JSO driving 55 mph in a 35 mph zone on Lenox Avenue, JSO said. Police attempted to pull Matthews over, but he led them on a high-speed chase down Delmar Street before running red lights on Lake Shore Blvd. and Cassat Ave., the police report said.

The incident happened shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday.

JSO thought Matthews might be impaired. When Matthews attempted a turn onto Roosevelt Blvd., he crashed because he was going too fast, JSO said.

Matthews reportedly told JSO he ran because he was scared and didn't want to go to jail. He told JSO he had never had a driver's license.

One of Matthews' passengers, Emory Byrd, was arrested because he violated probation, JSO said.

JSO said Matthews' mother was informed of the arrest. Matthews showed no signs of impairment, JSO said.
