They brought home a national championship; now there is a new push to send the Lady Trojans to the White House.
It was standing room only inside the Ribault High School gym on Thursday. Students, teachers and parents celebrated their very own high school national basketball champs, the Ribault Lady Trojans.
There are plans to send the winning squad to the White House and get them championship rings.
"National championships, Dick's Sporting Goods National Championship is huge and it's a huge accomplishment, so something they can have to reference back to, to share with their family members and children down the road, would be awesome," said Principal Christopher Jackson.
"I still don't believe it, still in shock," said Head Coach Shelia Seymore.
Seymore and her team of 11 are reaping the rewards of their hard work after losing in the first round last year and even being deemed as the underdog this year.
"At first, everyone was looking at us, like we didn't belong," Seymore said.
Seymore said that's because they were the only public school in the tournament.
"We made it the fuel to our flame, because just because they say we're the underdog, don't mean we're just going to sit down and roll over," said team captain Nola Carter.
And it's that same pride these girls hope will spread outside these walls.
"I'm glad that God has given them this opportunity to give other young people, especially girls, hope," said Seymore.
Coach Seymore said four players are graduating, but she’s excited about defending their title next year.
