JACKSONVILLE, Fla — Construction on a new downtown development project has been pushed back another month.

The Riverfront Plaza Project will break ground at the old landing site and crews won’t start construction until July 5th.

The delay is due to the holiday week and other festivities happening around that time to eliminate any traffic and or parking disruptions.

After phase 1 is finished, there will be a phase 2 of the project.

When the project’s complete there will be a central lawn, a river terrace, a hotel and sky garden, and outdoor dining options.

That will bring in a 44-story tower housing more than 300 apartments, a restaurant, and a 330-space parking garage.

One neighbor Action News Jax spoke with walks along the riverfront frequently and she said she hopes this project is not rushed.

“It is a space to maybe slow down, backtrack and say hey what do are other cities who look like us, and they are up against the water like this, and they are up against these historic, diverse communities, what did they do and what did they do right,” said neighbor Ariane Arndolph.

Developers said the timeline for construction on phase 1 could be a year.

Action News Jax also asked the city how Independent Drive will be redesigned and if the statue on the street will stay but was told the construction delay is the latest information they have at this time.
