MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — Safe Animal Shelter is getting some final touches before employees have the shelter's grand reopening.
The shelter has been closed since Hurricane Irma, which left the building badly damaged.
“Everything was ruined. You can see the water line right here on the door,” administrative assistant Shelley Finn said.
After weeks of donations from the community, they were finally able to rebuild.
The animals that were at Safe needed a place to go while the building was under construction.
“We had a lot of wonderful families that came to foster them and those that weren’t able to be fosters were sent to other shelters,” Finn said.
But now Safe is able to take in more animals to free up room in other shelters.
Fourteen dogs came from Clay County Animal Services and were brought to Safe.
“These are the dogs and we just had all new cages put on and repainted and everything,” Finn said.
Neighbors brought in handmade pillows and quilts and people have donated food as the shelter gears up for its official reopening Saturday.
