Safety of fair rides checked by state inspectors

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — For the seventh year in a row, Belle City Amusements is back in Jacksonville complete with funnel cakes and prizes and even its giant 100-foot ferris wheel.

But before you can ride, state inspectors were tasked with checking the safety of the attractions.

Inspectors looked at every single seat on the moonraker ride, pulling up on the harness to check for any issues. It's a tedious and time-consuming process as inspectors had to check dozens of rides.

Belle City Amusements President Charles Panacek said state inspections is just one part of a rigorous safety protocol.

"We do a lot of maintenance and safety that is manufacturer required. Every ride's manufacturer has a certain list of requirements that we must perform," said Panacek.

Last year Action News Jax showed you the inspection report for Belle City Amusements that revealed there were issues with almost 47 out the 61 rides. According to carnival operators, all of them were minor and were fixed before doors opened.

This year carnival maintenance workers were also double checking rides, while state inspectors examined others.

Panacek's company has been in business for 67 years, he said they've never had a fatality or major incident.

"We want the public to know that we've been inspected, everything out here is safe. They can trust to put their children on these rides," said Panacek.

The state is still working on its final report for this year which won't be available until Thursday. According to Belle City Amusements if there is a problem, the ride won't open until the issue is fixed.
