Scam alert: JEA customers targeted with fake toll-free numbers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — JEA has reported an uptick in scam attempts targeting utility customers with demands for immediate payment. Impostors are directing customers to pay by calling toll-free numbers or using barcodes at Walmart.

In response to the reported fraudulent activity, JEA is working to shut down the involved toll-free numbers and has contacted Walmart representatives regarding the barcode tactics.

Utility officials clarified that JEA does not call customers after business hours or demand instant payments over the phone.

The scam tactics often involve callers instructing customers to pay by phone or by sending payments using barcodes at Walmart stores. JEA does not accept payments through cash apps or mobile payment applications, and the utility does not require customers to purchase prepaid cards or gift cards to prevent service disconnections.

JEA advises customers never to provide or confirm personal details, including Social Security numbers or dates of birth, to anyone who initiates contact and claims to represent the utility company.

Customers who receive a suspicious call, text or email can verify their account balance online at jea.com or call 904-665-6000 to use JEA’s automated phone system.

The utility recommends calling 911 if a customer feels in physical danger and directs residents to jea.com/scams for additional details on common scam tactics.
