Man shot, killed at DUI checkpoint

LAKE CITY, Fla. -- An armed driver pulled a handgun on a Lake City police officer Friday night just before midnight at a DUI/Safety Checkpoint.

The Lake City Police Department began their preannounced DUI/Safety Checkpoint at 8:20 p.m in the 1400 block of US 90 West.

During this time, officers made contact with the driver of a 2012 Dodge pickup truck when the driver drew a handgun and pointed it out of the vehicle window at the officer, police said.

The officer was able to grab the firearm and struggle with the driver.

The officer drew his duty firearm and proceeded to fire and shot at the armed suspect, who died at the scene.

The armed suspect was later identified as Jimmy Eugene Barker of Louisville, Tenn.

The State Attorney's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement were called to the scene to investigate the shooting.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave as a standard procedure, pending the ongoing investigation of the shooting.
