Brian Fogarty pleaded guilty Wednesday to nine charges including sexual assault, kidnapping and armed robbery.

“The crimes you committed in this case were heinous and people who commit crimes such as yourself do not deserve to live among civilized people,” Judge Mark Borello said.

Fogarty was sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Police said Fogarty raped a Jacksonville Beach realtor at knifepoint then kidnapped her and her family in July 2016.

The next day, he raped and kidnapped another woman from the Westside.

Fogarty was arrested by police after a multi-county manhunt.

During an exclusive interview with Action News Jax, Fogarty’s sister explained that he has struggled with mental illness his entire life.

She didn’t want to speak on camera but said: “This is not my brother.”

According to his sister, Fogarty was supposed to be in jail for other offenses but had been released early.

She said her family contacted multiple resources throughout Fogarty’s life seeking help for his mental illness.

“What he’s done is heinous," his sister said. "I pray that the victims can overcome it, get over it, and move on with their lives.”
