SJSO: Man who shoplifted, stole car, drove on wrong side of road on the run possibly in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office told Action News Jax that a man is on the run, possibly in Jacksonville, after a crime spree that included shoplifting, carjacking, and driving on the wrong side of the road. He is suspected to be driving a silver Chevrolet Cruze.

Around 5 p.m., SJSO received a call about a shoplifter at a Walmart in St. Augustine who stole several food items. When a deputy arrived, the shoplifter was gone, but the officer was able to identify the suspect through surveillance footage because of past run-ins with the man.

Around the time when they found the suspect's car, SJSO received reports of a car driving recklessly, over 100 miles per hour, presumably the suspect. He later crashed on US1 near International Golf Parkway, but didn't stop.

Police later found the suspect's vehicle at a car dealership that appeared to have been burglarized. Police believe the man stole a car from the dealership.

At this point, an officer finally caught up with the suspect and observed him driving north, head-on to traffic in the southbound lane of US1.

SJSO then received a call from a gas station near Racetrack Road and State Road 13 regarding a man who allegedly threatened a person and stole their car.

The suspect may be driving a silver Chevrolet Cruze. Police believe there may be another person with him.

Though police have identified the suspect, they are not releasing his name.
