Slain Jacksonville 14-year-old remembered as 'Henry the Great' by his grandma

Henry Atkins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Family members of 14-year-old Henry Atkins are saying their goodbyes after he was shot and killed last week.

Police say the teenager was behind a closed day care off Ricker Road near Indian Lakes Drive when he was shot on Sept. 12. Investigators say three minors were brought in for questioning after flagging down a passerby to take Henry to a fire station.

“He said, 'Memaw,' I said, 'Yes baby.' He said, 'I love you,' I said, 'I love you, too,'” she said.

“He’s going to be missed, very much. I call him Henry the Great because God instilled in him greatness, and he was a great young man,” Audrey Ross, Henry's grandmother, said.

Ross, who Henry called Memaw, remembers her last conversation with her grandson.

JSO tells Action News Jax it’s an ongoing investigation.

“An arrest will be made and justice will be served,” Ross said.
