AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. — People who live on Amelia Island said coyotes are getting too close for comfort.

Some worry the animals pose a risk to children and pets.

A photo snapped July 2 on 8th Street in Fernandina Beach captured a coyote. It’s one of several sightings in Nassau County in recent weeks.

Amelia Island homeowner Chris Carlee said he’s seen them too.

“I've seen them right across there by the retention pond, and I’ve actually seen them just loping up the street,” Carlee said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said it’s gotten calls about several sightings in Fernandina Beach.

The FWC said coyotes rarely pose a threat to people, especially adults.

Carlee said the ones he’s seen are likely scavenging for food in trash cans.

“They don't seem to be afraid of anything, but at the same time they don't seem aggressive either,” Carlee said.

Posts on social media show some people are worried coyotes could prey on small pets or harm children.

“I don't see them as aggressive; I’m sure that they could be,” Carlee said.

FWC said if you see a coyote, scare it off by yelling or making a loud noise. Do not run from a coyote because it could chase you.
