Son of Mayport woman who died in fire said she was smoking and on oxygen

Fire Marshall's are still investigating after a fire left a woman dead in the Mayport area Monday night.

However, Tuesday Action News Jax spoke with her son who said it was her smoking habit that caused the fire to start.

Lewis said his mom has lived in Jacksonville her entire life and she was well known in the neighborhood.

Henry Lewis said his mother Debbie Lewis, 59, was on oxygen and fell asleep with a cigarette in her mouth and that’s what caused the fire.

"Everybody in the neighborhood knew her, she was the oldest resident here. She did everything she could to help people," Lewis said. 
 
He said Debbie needed oxygen to breathe and she also had a smoking habit.

He believes it was a combination between the two that caused her death.

"The fire took place when she was smoking and took some medication and she fell asleep and the whole room filled with oxygen from her being on the oxygen machine. "She bought this house brand new back in the day. It was her dream house," Lewis said. 
 
Fire marshals said the cause of the fire is still unknown. Lewis is now cherishing the memories he shared with his mother.
