St. Augustine 450th celebration continues on Labor Day

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — St. Augustine is less than 24 hours away from turning 450 years old. People have been celebrating the milestone in the ancient city since last Thursday.

On Labor Day, city leaders gathered in the Plaza de la Constitucion to cut a cake for the nation’s oldest city.

While the city’s actual birthday isn’t until Tuesday, the leaders cut a huge cake in the city center for St. Augustine’s birthday at 2 p.m. on Monday.

Over the weekend, huge crowds packed downtown St. Augustine to see headliners like Aaron Neville and Emmylou Harris.

City leaders are estimating the attendance on Saturday night to be about 50,000 people.

Those are huge numbers for the small town of only about 13,000 residents.

There will be more cultural tours of the city Monday, but also the cathedral basilica is preparing for huge event Tuesday as they will host papal legate, Cardinal Sean O’Malley.

O’Malley is expected to hold mass Tuesday at 11 a.m. for an invitation only event but there will be a big projector set up outside for those who want to watch and receive communion as well.
