St. Augustine Beach Police crack down on dangerous driving on A1A

Police are cracking down on speeding and aggressive driving on a busy stretch in the heart of St. Augustine Beach.

Police are ramping up enforcement on A1A South because they’re getting complaints from drivers.

“Every once in a while, you see someone that’s just going to defy it all and not slow down to 40 miles an hour,” said Doyle Moody, who lives off A1A South. “I had to take another route 10 minutes ago because there was a wreck right here. And it’s just so many cars. When you get that many cars in that small a space, you’re going to have problems.”

“It’s the peak summer season right now. So we average between 30,000 and 33,000 cars a day,” said St. Augustine Beach police Commander Jim Parker.

The Police Department put out a warning about the increased patrols on its Facebook page.

“If I can get everybody to comply willingly, that’s the goal we would like to achieve. If not, we’re going to get into some more aggressive enforcement,” said Parker.

Elise Sloan, who lives off A1A South, said speeding is a constant problem.

“When there have been accidents at the lights, it has hurt pedestrians, and other people and bicyclists. So that’s not a good thing. We need to get people to watch the speed limit, which is pretty high as it is,” said Sloan.

Parker said if the increased patrols don’t get speeding under control, the Police Department may call in reinforcements from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
