The lighthouse tower hasn't been painted since 2005 and is suffering from paint deterioration as well as corrosion and rust, which is visible on the lantern.
The renovation is expected to cost about $280,000, but the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum nonprofit in charge of the project has secured $200,000. Now, the nonprofit is calling on the community to help fill in the price gap.
The lighthouse non-profit has a crowdfunding site setup for donations. When contributing at least $100, you'll get a limited-edition T-shirt.
The 165 foot lighthouse dates back to 1874 and is central is St. Augustine. During the first phase of the project, access to the tower will be limited to visitors.
