ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Some St. Augustine residents went kayaking Sunday morning, but not in a river or a pond. They did so on their street.

Neighbors along a road off Coquina Avenue live right next to Quarry Creek, and they say the water was nearly at their doorsteps – the result of king tides and nor’easter winds and rains this weekend.

One neighbor, who has the creek right behind her house, said that when she woke up Sunday morning, the creek had leaked into her front yard.

“It was quite an event this morning with our first really high king tide,” said resident Cynthia Schames, who moved to St. Augustine from New York City about three months ago.

“We looked out the back window and saw that we had a whole lot of water everywhere, and so when we looked out the front window, we started seeing our neighbors and their kids kayaking in the street,” Schames said.

Action News Jax First Alert Weather Team says the flooding was the result of the king tide, and rainfall and wind from a local nor’easter.

If you’re going to live waterfront or very close to the water, that’s just sort of the — you take it as it comes,” Schames said. “Our dogs had a really fun time playing in the water, though.”

Brady Reich says he’s lived in the neighborhood for more than six years. His five-year-old daughter was one of the kids who joined in on the fun, She said she had fun in the kayak with her friend, Sage.

“We get a king tide like this with a nor’easter about probably about once a year,” Reich said. “As long as it’s not coming in the house, we just kind of have fun with it, go out in the kayaks. And for some reason, it always happens on the weekend, so the kids are home.”

The First Alert Weather Team says tidal flooding is likely through Tuesday, and high winds at the beach could cause major erosion.
