ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — The last St. Augustine beach re-nourishment project took place in 2018.
Approximately 800,000 cubic yards of sand was put onto eroded areas.
St. Johns County residents believe this helped prevent extensive damage from Hurricane Dorian in St. Augustine.
The Jacksonville District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $15,179,050 contract on July 7 to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Compan to restore eroded shoreline along in that area. The project is aimed to prevent storm damage to infrastructure, including the area’s major hurricane evacuation route, State Road A1A.
In August, dune restoration is expected to be underway in the Ponte Vedra/Vilano Beach area.
Its also meant to protect the sea turtle and shorebird habitat.
