LAKE BUTLER, Fla. — Union County High School and Lake Butler Elementary canceled classes Wednesday following a severe storm Tuesday that caused extensive property and infrastructure damage across campus.
School and district administrators met with school board members to evaluate campus safety after the storm. Officials determined that closing the school was necessary to assess the full extent of the damage and allow crews to restore critical systems.
The storm knocked down trees and damaged campus fences with falling limbs. Rainwater entered the roof of the UCHS Gym on the senior side of campus after the structure sustained damage during the storm.
Essential infrastructure across the campus was disabled by the severe weather--electricity, internet service, air conditioning and safety systems were rendered nonoperational.
Clean-up crews, electricians and other specialists have been deployed across campus to remove debris, perform repairs and work toward restoring full operations.
School officials will keep the community updated on repair progress throughout the day and announce plans regarding the schedule for school tomorrow.
