A Jacksonville man is facing charges after police say he used pepper spray to carjack a car salesman and rob a liquor store.
Police say Merrill Calvin Richardson Jr., 44, went to USA Auto Sales on Beach Boulevard Wednesday and asked to see a car.
He pepper sprayed a salesman and stole a 2014 Chevy Impala around 3:30 p.m., according to Richardson's arrest report.
Police said a second robbery was reported at Classic Wine and Spirits on Atlantic Boulevard just after 5 p.m.
According to the report, a man wearing a camouflage hat entered the store and said, "Hey, this is a robbery. Hey, this is a stick up."
The victim replied, "Are you sure?"
The suspect asked the victim if he needed to see the gun, then demanded money from the drawer and safe, the report says.
The victim told the suspect he could not enter the safe, and the suspect instead demanded a bottle of Remy Martin liquor.
He pepper sprayed the victim as he was leaving the store, according to the report.
Police saw the car believed to be associated with the robberies at the intersection of St. Johns Bluff and Atlantic Boulevard and tried to stop it.
Police said the driver - a man wearing a camouflage hat - threw a large sum of money out of the car while fleeing.
He was arrested after crashing the car.
Police identified the driver as Richardson and found pepper spray in his pocket, according to the report.
Officers also found a box of Yuengling stolen from a Shell Gas Station on Mayport Road in the car.
Richardson, who is listed as a transient in his arrest report, is facing charges including armed robbery, theft and attempting to elude law enforcement.
