JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A teenage boy was hospitalized with a gunshot wound after police say another person accidentally discharged a firearm inside a Jacksonville apartment.
Officers responded to a local hospital around 10:30 p.m. Saturday after a mid-teen boy arrived with a gunshot wound, according to Sgt. J. Johnson of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Robbery and Violent Crime Unit.
The boy’s injuries are considered non-life-threatening, and he is cooperating with investigators.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a preliminary investigation found the boy was in a back bedroom of an apartment handling a firearm when he dropped it. Another person inside the apartment picked up the weapon, and it discharged, striking him in the buttocks.
The boy then called a family member, who drove him to the hospital, police said.
Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident and does not pose a threat to the community.
