EDGEWATER, Fla. — Federal investigators are on scene in Volusia County where two people were killed Saturday in a small plane collision, according to Edgewater Fire Department officials.
The planes collided and crashed into a wooded field south of New Smyrna Beach near State Road 442 about a mile east of Interstate 95.
One of the pilots reportedly called shortly before 9 a.m. to report a mid-air collision.
Edgewater Police Chief David Arcieri said it's unknown whether the pilots were doing formations or practicing for a nearby air show.
Arcieri said a National Transportation Safety Board investigator is at the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration will also be investigating.
