JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Every time Larry Portersfield surveys the vandalism at Little St. Mary’s River Park, he gets upset.
"Somebody's come in here, whether they're on their 4 wheel drive vehicle or their pickups -- and just destroyed these docks,” he explained.
Three docks to be exact. And a foot bridge. According to the Baker County Sheriff's Office, at least $4,000 worth of damage was done.
Whoever is responsible, has not been caught.
The park mostly attracts children and senior citizens, but lately -- no one has been able to enjoy it. Until repairs are made, it will be shut down to the public.
"Thrill seeker. Want to impress their girlfriends or impress their friends or whatever,” Portersfield continued.
Portersfield and his group Baker County Veterans Council are stepping up to fix the park. They agreed to do repairs as long as the County covers the materials cost. The first cleanup effort begins this weekend.
"I'm hoping to take care of this vandalism. That's our goal. I'd love to have people come out and help us -- even if it's just for moral support, if nothing else."
The volunteer team is meeting at the park at 8 a.m. July 12. If you want to help out, you're asked to wear comfortable clothing. Refreshments will be provided.
