Wallace denied unemployment

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The state of Florida denied unemployment benefits for the embattled former president of Florida State College of Jacksonville.

Steve Wallace was forced out at FSCJ last year amid a financial aid scandal and ethics investigation. Action News learned he left with more than a $1 million golden parachute, funded by Florida taxpayers.

Despite his payout, Wallace asked the state for $275 a week in unemployment benefits.

Action News anchor Paige Kelton obtained documents from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity that show the agency disqualified Wallace's request. The DEO ruled his discharge "was for misconduct connected with the work."

Wallace is under investigation by State Attorney Angela Corey after Florida's inspector general found Wallace may have violated state ethics laws. Copyright 2014 Cox Media Group, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
