GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — The Glynn County Board of Commissioners announced a mosquito sample collected in the Belle Point Creek area near King Cotton Road tested positive for West Nile virus on Friday, Sept. 18.
There are currently no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Glynn County.
Following the test result, Vector Disease Control International, the mosquito control contractor for Glynn County, conducted targeted mosquito spraying and larval treatment in the area. Technicians also inspected the location for potential mosquito breeding sites.
The Glynn County Board of Commissioners stated that enhanced monitoring, testing and mosquito control operations will continue across the region.
“These efforts will remain in place until mosquito populations are diminished and testing yields negative results for West Nile virus,” the board said in a statement. Additional treatments will be conducted as needed.
Local officials also encouraged community members to take personal protective measures against mosquito bites.
“Residents are encouraged to help prevent mosquito bites by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors and eliminating mosquito breeding opportunities around their homes,” the board said.
Glynn County and Vector Disease Control International will continue monitoring test results and share information about any additional positive findings.
