A Jacksonville woman was killed when she stepped onto I-295 while trying to retrieve her dog, witnesses told the Florida Highway Patrol.

Sylvia Taylor, 56, stopped her car on the left emergency lane on I-295 and Pritchard Road shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Taylor was trying to recover her dog, witnesses said. The animal reportedly jumped or fell from Taylor's car while she drove.

Taylor was struck by a 2017 Camry driven by Natasha Atkinson, 27, of Orange Park. Atkinson had two small children in the car with her.

Atkinson pulled over right away, and alcohol was not a factor, the FHP said.

The FHP report didn't state if the dog was found or recovered.
