DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A woman says Mugshots.com refused to take her mugshot down, even though state law says refusing to take down mugshots is illegal.
Sharlondrah Stephens says people shouldn't have to fight so hard to get their mugshots removed when their records have been expunged.
"It's killing me. I'm suffering very bad emotionally, " Stephens said.
She was shocked to see her mugshot on Mugshot.com.
Stephens was arrested in 2005 on a criminal damage to property charge. She completed a first offender program, and her conviction was wiped from her record.
Stephens tried to get Mugshots.com to remove the photos, but the website would only do it for $399.
Stephens is a human resources manager and thinks this is why she doesn't get callbacks when she applies for jobs.
Georgia state Rep. Brian Strickland authored a law that made it harder for outlets to get mugshots from law enforcement websites, but says out-of-state websites don't have to follow that law.
"I'm still exploring, working with the attorney general's office, any other way we can get jurisdiction on these folks," Strickland said.
Channel 2's Tom Jones called Mugshots.com, who said they would waive the unpublishing fee for Stephens.
They said they're not charging because of Georgia state law. "They told you a bald face lie," Stephens said.
