JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that happened overnight on the Northside.

First responders were called around 12:30 a.m. Monday to West 13th Street near Pullman Avenue in the Durkeeville neighborhood for an adult man, approximately in his early to mid-30s, who had been shot, JSO said. Life-saving efforts failed, and he was pronounced dead.

Police believe everyone involved in the shooting has been detained.

“Multiple people have been detained and are currently being interviewed together with more information,” JSO Sgt. Saunders said. “Based on what we know, although we are so early in investigating, we believe all parties are accounted for and that there is no threat to the community.”

When Action News Jax arrived Monday morning, the victim’s body was still at the scene as police waited for a search warrant to enter the property where the shooting happened to collect evidence and the body.

A woman could be heard screaming that she wanted to see him, apparently wanting to see the victim’s body before the medical examiner collected it.

Several people lingering near the scene Monday morning declined to talk about what happened.

EWU students react

The shooting happened a few blocks from Edward Waters University, and students had mixed reactions to the news.

“A bullet don’t got no name on it, so you have to be careful wherever you go,” student Riyon Clark said.

Student Marcuss Ealy said, “Anybody can get hit. And our security barely protects us anyway, and we’re already in the hood, so...”

Student Kennedy Richardson said she feels safe. “Our security does walk around 24/7. We do also have JSO around the corner as well, so I feel very safe.”

Local makeup artist Danasia Matthews had a different view. “Especially with there being a police station right there, I just feel like things like that shouldn’t be occurring as often as they do,” she said.

Questions remain

Action News Jax asked JSO what led up to the shooting, whether the victim was shot inside or outside the property, where on his body he was shot and what his identity is. Police said they could not answer those questions at this time.

Action News Jax is working to learn more details and will provide updates when they are available.
