Former Ala. teacher marries teen student amid legal charges

A former Alabama math teacher married his 18-year-old high school student in Gulf Shores, Ala., over the weekend, Al.com reports.

Matthew Shane Wester, 37, was charged in January for having sexual contact with student, Amy Cox. Cox, who graduated high school in May, was 17 when the alleged relationship began, District Attorney Pamela Casey, told to Al.com.

“The charges currently pending against Mr. Wester stem from an investigation of his relationship with the victim while she was a student and he was a teacher,” Casey said to AL.com. “Now that the legal status of their relationship has changed, we will have to look at our case to determine how we will proceed.”

Wester was married when he was charged. He divorced his wife in April, and was put on leave from his teaching job in November. He later resigned.

The Post previously reported on a case in Lake Worth, Fla., in which a 29-year-old drama teacher cheated on her husband with her 17-year-old student. She lost her teaching cerfiticate when the teenage boy told school authorities about the affair.
