Jacksonville, FL — A local post office was vandalized on Fort Caroline Road.

Customers woke up Thursday morning to broken windows and giant shards of glass as they were dropping off their mail.

We counted nearly 24 windows broken.

“This is horrible. Oh, this is awful. Oh, I’m shocked. Why would someone do something like this?” BJ Washington said.

Washington wanted to deliver some treats to the postal workers inside, but her trip was cut short.

“Banana bread. I also bring them bread. So I get up early in the morning 5:00 a.m. 6:00 a.m. I make bread and I bring them bread,” Washington said.

Instead, she saw the yellow tape was wrapped around the door with a “Do Not Enter” sign posted, alerting others to head to the Merrill Road or Beach Boulevard locations because this location is closed.

It appears that someone may have broken inside through the side door.

That’s because we noticed the windows around the side of the building smashed from inside.

It’s unclear at this time if anyone took anything but we did notice a surveillance camera above the door on the inside which may have caught who did this.

I reached out to the United States Postal Service to see if we could get a copy of that surveillance video.

I’m still waiting to hear back.

“I guess someone doesn’t have anything else to do today, so they come and do something like this. It’s very sad,” Washington said.

Action News Jax reached out to our Law and Safety expert Dale Carson.

Carson told me damage to a federal building carries more serious penalties.

Unlike regular property, if investigators find out there was a break-in, it could be punishable for up to 20 years in prison.

Action News Jax also reached out to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office this morning to see if a police report was filed.

According to JSO recorders, an officer responded to the scene.
