JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Sources say the man who died in a SWAT standoff is David Wenzel.
Wenzel, 51, was found dead after negotiating with officers in a SWAT callout Thursday afternoon.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was negotiating Wenzel, who they believed was armed for several hours before losing contact with him.
Officers went inside the home in the 12000 block of Otter Lake Court East and found Wenzel dead, possibly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said JSO.
Police initially responded to the 10000 block of Centurian Parkway around 8:45 a.m. Thursday to a call of a distraught person. When officers arrived, the man had left, said JSO spokesman Christian Hancock.
Officers were able to find Wenzel in Otter Lake Court East, which is a few blocks south of Atlantic Boulevard and near the intersection of Aztec Drive and Daybreak Court.
Wenzel was barricaded in the home, and authorities negotiated with him.
The SWAT team was on the scene with at least a dozen officers with rifles and tactical gear.
Officials said they did not believe anyone else was inside the home during the incident.
The homes in the area were evacuated as a safety precaution.
Neighbors say Wenzel was going through a divorce with his wife Tracy, who is a partner at a law office.
He had a 9- and 11-year-old sons, according to neighbors and coached their little league baseball team.
Neighbors remember him as a stay-at-home dad who fished while the boys were at school.
Wenzel was nice and polite, according to people in the neighborhood. Some people even saw him at his sons' baseballpractice last night and say he seemed "just fine."
