Police: Florida man overdoses at Wawa with toddler in the backseat

A Lake Park man overdosed Sunday morning in a Wawa parking lot while a toddler sat in the backseat of his car, Riviera Beach police said.

Officials found Joseph Delligatti, 27, unconscious and convulsing shortly before noon Sunday in the driver’s seat of a tan Mercedes-Benz in the gas station’s lot off West Blue Heron Boulevard. Police said the car was still in drive. A 3-year-old was in the backseat.

Riviera Beach Fire Rescue crews revived Delligatti with Narcan and he regained consciousness. He told officials he took heroin the night before.

Police were unable to wake Delligatti, so they broke the car’s windows. A cigarette box with a small glass pipe that was burnt on both ends — a crack pipe — fell from Delligatti’s lap.

He was taken to a hospital, where the medical staff determined he had heroin and other illegal drugs in his system, police records state.

Delligatti faces child neglect and drug-related charges. His relationship with the child was redacted from the police report. A judge on Monday ordered he undergo drug treatment while in the Palm Beach County Jail.
