Trash builds at apartment complex on Southside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It's hard to miss the mounds of garbage piled up around the massive Villages at Baymeadows Complex on the Southside.

An Action News crew drove around the complex looking for the garbage.

They found a couch and some garbage bags piled up. Then they saw the flies.

It only got worse as they went through the community.

One of the dumpsters where the garbage is supposed to go is overflowing with cleaning supplies, ice cream containers, even field soccer cones.  That's not even the big concern.

The big concern is garbage bags that are up to to Action News reporter Cole Heath’s shoulder and he is 6 feet 5 inches tall.  Garbage removal is included in the apartment complex rent.

The second dumpster is where Action News found Corey Johnson.

“I see it every time I come out here to check my mail… old lawn chairs beer boxes…. You've got week old trash,” said Johnson.

A trash compactor truck did eventually show up Thursday morning.

Action News reporter Cole Heath asked a spokesman for Advanced Disposal why this problem is so bad.

He couldn't say, but this is the first time these trucks dropped off a compactor in 21 days.

“It is disgusting, I wish I could pack up and move right now,” said Brian Brevaldo.

Brevaldo lives next to one of the over-flowing dumpsters.

“We had a letter that said they were working on the issue, but we haven't seen much,” Brevaldo said.

Another neighbor living at the complex sent Action News an email sent to residents on Monday.

Part of it says management is aware of the unsightly trash compactors and resolving the issue as quickly as possible.

Action News reporter Cole Heath went to the leasing office for answers.

The front door was locked. Heath saw two women in the office, not answering.

Heath then saw an employee heading out the back door.

The employee said the problem has only been going on for two days.

This afternoon, Heath got an email from the complex management group.

The email reads, “The overflow problem with the trash compactors at the property has been resolved.  We have no further comment!"

Heath spoke with the company that over-sees the garbage removal.

The company wouldn't give the reasons why they couldn’t pick up the trash.

But they did say that each of those compactors can hold up to 3 weeks of garbage despite the long break in pick-ups.
