French fashion designer Pierre Cardin dead at 98

French fashion designer Pierre Cardin has died. He was 98.

Cardin’s futuristic designs became iconic in the 20th century and he put his name on myriad products including wristwatches, bedsheets and neck ties. During the brand’s heyday in the 1970s and 80s, Cardin products were sold in more than 100,000 retailers worldwide.

Cardin was elected into the Fine Arts Academy in 1992.

France’s Academy of Fine Arts announced his death Tuesday on social media. He died at a hospital in western Paris, France 24 reported.
